A Stepmother's Duty

If your daughter came to you with tears on her face,

If your daughter came to you with rejected disgrace,

Because a stranger, of the ball, took her predestined place,

What wouldn’t you, as a mother do?

If your daughter came to you with desperation,

As she hears the news of the prince’s “find the missing girl” operation.

If your daughter’s one chance relies on the secret of cinderella, of no blood relation,

What wouldn’t you, as a mother do?

The opportunity came to me in the form of a fragile glass slipper.

That Cinderella, the ugly sister, living it my house, was cloth stuck in our perfect family zipper.

In my hands, I smashed the glass, and became jack the ripper.

Because It was all I, as a mother could do.

It was my duty to take the Cinderella sister and lock her somewhere

I desperately needed her and her baggage out of our hair

So my daughter could gallop away with the royal heir

Because It was all I, as a mother could do.

And when the prince still chose the sister instead of my princess

There was a fairytale rewrite we were forced to acquiesce

Suddenly my daughter was the evil stepsister, a malicious countess

There was nothing I, as a mother could do.

I swear! Cinderella has framed me to be an abusive stepmother

Now they’ve all got the story wrong, one way or another

It was Cinderella who took away my daughter’s princess fate

Yet somehow it is the dedicated mother, I, that they hate.
