Spirit Rise

Thu, 03/10/2016 - 19:29 -- Ashbee

My spirit, the foundation of my being.

The sensation that swells in my chest and extends through my veins and through the tips of my fingers to the soles of my feet.

That is my spirit.

The engine that drives my body out of bed each morning.

The invisible force my ancestors possessed to survive everyday oppression.

The blinding light that continues to shine through my sullen eyes and pursed lips

During times when the weight of the world has moved me to silence and made my heart feel heavy.

The ball of fire in my soul that leave people confounded by my resilience.

The courage to go on despite all the strife and the resistance.

My spirit is the only thing that can keep me alive.

With it burning inside me, I can find the strength to yield the food I need for my worn body.

I can seek shelter under a profusion of palm tree leaves and sleep contently on a bundle of sticks,

And find the water I will thirst for after my salty tears reach my tongue because I will weep.

My spirit is what will keep me running despite the daunting isolation,

And the dreary existence I will wake up to each day I open my eyes.

My spirit will always carry me when I am on my knees, looking up to the sky.

In times when I feel like God isn't around.

In times when I see one set of footprints in the sand,

But believe they are mine.

My spirit will be my anchor when my soul grows weary,

And when my mind begins to become predisposed to insanity,

My spirit is what will grip tightly to logic.

God forbid I were to find myself alone on an island,

I'll take my spirit with me.

For it is my greatest weapon against mortality.

I will not die, I will not die, I cannot die.

My spirit will rise.
