Speak

Mon, 01/16/2017 - 20:25 -- InkyOwl

Hello! I am new to this and this is my first poem. The grammar isn't perfect and I'm not sure if this was the best way to set it out but please give me feedback on what you think :-)

Victims of rape often don't speak out because they don't know the kind of people they're speaking to.

They don't know if people will support them or if they'll get the interrogation.

What were you wearing?" "Were you drinking?" "Did you take drugs"

Even at ten years old when im getting bullied and blamed for getting something at four years old I didn't even know existed.

When someone's life is destroyed, snatched and taken by someone who thinks they have a right to your body when they don't even understand the word "no" or "stop".

Someone who tells you that you won't be belived because the media always shows that women and girls are wrong.

I was getting bullied in the playground because I spoke when I was 10.

"why did you wait?" "attention seeker" and that was only back then.

Teenage years came and consensual sex was on the cards but guys didn't get why I was so nervous sitting in the back seat of a car.

Or when I still get nervous walking with my friends and being left alone at a bar.

Being cautious with my drinks, not talking to strange men and going home all because of what happened way back when.

"get over it" "it was so long ago" "why are you still like this?"

They think a lifetime of trauma can be swept away with a court case and bail to pay.

Sometimes I think I never should have said a thing.

But that's what happens when you have the glory of not getting raped.

When someone respects your body and you cant imagine what's its like for someone to not.

I got bullied I got teased and I supported others.

I spoke up about my past, I upset my mum and my brother.

I never thought I would be questioned about my innocence as a child, have my life taken away and get blamed for another's crime.

But it happens far too often for us to ignore so im not going to be quiet. Not anymore.

Speak up if you see something, say something, please.

People will thank you, even if others tease.

As a woman who felt like a victim all her life, there is NO excuse, even if you're his wife.

Speak up, speak out, make them listen, shout.

I wont stand back and let them win. I am no longer a rape victim.

This poem is about:
Me
My family
