So Much More Than Just One Word

Wed, 11/04/2015 - 13:36 -- Yang.Z

To define me with a single word is impossible.

I am a collection of words strung together.

I am loud to make up for my small stature.

I am loud to prove my size does not define the meek little girl everyone sees at first.

I am loud to show I have ideas that will not be left unheard.

I am loud for those who cannot speak for themselves.

I am loud.

I am loud.

I am loud.

I am a warrior. Everyday I battle depression and diabetes.

I am a warrior because I do not let those define me.

I am a warrior because after my father’s deportation, I began to speak up rather than be silent.

I am a warrior because I scream for injustice.

I am a warrior because no matter how many lashes life hits me with, I refuse to stay down.

I am a warrior.

I am a warrior.

I am a warrior.

I am a princess but not because I am spoiled.

I am a princess because I care for everyone no matter what.

I am a princess because I forgive those who do me wrong.

I am a princess for I do not let my face be the only important thing about me.

My heart, my soul, and my mind live to help people.

I am a princess.

I am a princess.

I am a princess.

I am stubborn for I do not let others define who I am.

I am stubborn because when someone tells me I can’t

I say “Watch me.”

I am stubborn, like the phoenix I rise from the ashes.

I am stubborn to show the world just because I am a woman does not mean I can’t change the world.

I am stubborn to prove to everyone I am not charity case to pity but a fighter to admire.

I am stubborn.

I am stubborn.

I am stubborn.

I am a dreamer because I still believe in fairytales.

I am a dreamer because I still believe in the ultimate love story.

I am a dreamer because I believe in finding my soulmate.

I am a dreamer for I let my head be in the clouds.

I am a dreamer because I desire so much more than just money.

I desire to do so much more in life.

I am the dreamer.

I am the dreamer.

I am the dreamer.

I am so many things that it is impossible to tell them all but I will try...

I am Mexican-American.

I was molded and created by both countries.

One of liberty and opportunity,

the other of culture and beauty.

I am not one nor the other.

I am both.

I am the daughter of the man named Roman.

Like the Romans, he is wise.

He taught me to love.

He taught me to believe.

He taught me strength.

Because I am his daughter,

I am more than I can ever explain.

I am the daughter of Maria.

Oh Maria, the queen of the Mexican culture.

She is my queen.

She taught me beauty in everything.

She taught me to dream big.

She taught me not to conform.

Because I am her daughter,

I am so much more than just one word.

It is impossible to tell you everything I am.

To define me with a single word is impossible.

I am a collection of words strung together.

This poem is about:
Me
My family
My country
Our world
