The Small Thoughts of a Passing Period

Location

Have you ever leaned back

And watch the world turn?

Turning, turning…

Have you ever felt

The sigh of relief

As the bell rings

And the hall is filled

With the shuffling feet?

Have you ever witnessed

In some dim corner

Behind the lockers,

A stolen, breathless, kiss?

Have you ever split

A 45-cent cafeteria cookie

That tastes faintly

Of its plastic baggie?

Have you ever felt the bass

Drop

Pounding in your chest as

Tons of sweaty kids are

Dancing in the gym.

Have you ever seen

Behind their eyes,

Heartache hidden by

Sweet pretending?

Have you ever been wondering

Young as we are

We may not adapt

As easily as you think?

To move with change-

A survival instinct.

Have you ever been

Part of a mindless

Mass of students?

The next generation

Have you ever had

Such in-your-bones

Innermost-being exaustion?

Have you ever felt

The fire to rebel

To love, to rise up,

Squelched?

Have you ever found

That little ray of hope

The pulse of life

Pounding through

The underground?

Have you seen these faces?

Oh, people, lift your eyes,

To meet their gaze?

By your orders we run

This suicidal race.
