Small Talk

'How have you been?
How is your family?'
I asked the shell of a woman
From my knowledge of hospitality.

'Fine!' She said cheerfully
Clinging tight to her woes.
For who wants a sob story
As far as small talk goes?

'I'm good too. Life's great!'
I stretch my face to a smile.
Pretending she wanted to know
Shutting off my brain for awhile.

'Glad to hear.' She replied
'I'm actually miserable you know'
She skipped the latter part however
That's how small talk goes.

'See you later I heard.'
It was me bidding her adieu.
Knowing full well my intent
Wouldn't give my words their due.

My insincerity was appreciated
Relieved as farewell she bode.
She had played her part well
As far as small talk goes.
