A Simpler Time

Location

I simply am.

I exist, but not hinder.

The radiant sun smiles upon me,

Her rays disseminating amongst the trees

Swaying in tacit understanding.

The grass reticently whispers hello,

It waves to and fro in the gentle zephyr

Rearing it blades to greet me.

I tiredly gaze upon streets after streets,

Gears whirring methodically in my mind,

My basket steadily thumping against me.

I note the world’s progression grimly,

From the dirt roads painfully paved,

To the rain’s steady hum,

Now layered with acidic undertones.

My wheel spins with the world,

With each revolution my youth unravels.

The clock’s hands reach out to preserve me,

Yet entangled in its own shackles of movement.

The wind whispers a poignant goodbye

As the sinister oiled machines

Have already begun to cackle with triumph.

My wheels slow, my spokes become visible

The evanescent inertia is coming to end.

My only companion will be hiss of the smog

As I plunge into haze alone.

But for now,

I simply am.

Faithfully I will remain.

A bicycle.
