Biting my lip in anticipation
Sweat forming at my temple
I don’t know if I can hold on much longer
So I let go
My feet crunch in the woodchips
I run like a cheetah
I leap and hit the swing
Just as I hear “Man on woodchips!”
I want to squeal with joy
But I can’t blow my cover
So I swing my fist in the air
Signaling my success
A different boy lands from the monkey bars
He isn’t as lucky
“Man on woodchips!”
And he stomps his foot in defeat
Crap, I need to find a new place
He knows where I am
So I run to the slide
And settle in my new dominion
But I see him come my way
My shoes keep slipping on the plastic
He grabs my leg
And my heart drops
His eyes snap open
And his hand gets tighter
My insides burst into fire
When he says, “You’re it!”
