It’s always the mirror that breaks you,

your unforgiving glass reflection.

You will never notice

the unique glint in your eyes

when you discover something new,

nor the way your rare smile

lights up the faces

of everyone in the same room.

All you see is a blurry photograph

of your painfully shattered dreams.

The polished glass hangs

on the eerily, white wall

in a silent chant:

‘You will never be good enough’.

You learn to loathe

the bits and pieces that

create a chasm between

you

                            and everyone else.

And you fade into a memory

of once bright cheeks,

trading in your unique beauty

for the mundane appearance

you believe the world desires.
