There's Sally, getting sprayed by a hose,
She screams and falls, landing upon her brother,
She is crying and trying to get away,
The men don't let up.
She is my friend.

I have been friends with Sally since fourth grade,
I kept her a secret,
Scared my family would look down upon me.
Now, I watch her get treated like a pest.
She turns and our eyes meet.

She opens her mouth,
my name on her lips,
I close my eyes and keep walking home,
I hear dogs barking and police sirens wailing,
I need to get away.

I find nothing wrong with colored people,
but I don't want to be shunned like them,
I am a normal white girl, a weak one.
A true friend would help Sally up and carry her home,
While I walked away when she needed me the most.

I get shoved out of the way as a man pushes past me,
his entire body wet,
police race past me too.
I look back at Sally,
unsure of what to do.

I stop and feel regret swell in my chest,
I cannot live with this guilt!
I drop my books and race towards her,
A look of surprise crosses her face,
I smile as I reach her and lift her up.

She hugs me, soaking wet an all.
I hug her tightly as she cries on my shoulder.
Barking comes closer, a man holding the dog back.
"Step away form her!" He yells.
I kiss Sally's cheek and turn around.

"No! She is a person just as I am! If you're arresting her, you're arresting me too!"
Sally trembles behind my back,
the man scowls, his grip on the dog loosening.
"If that's how it's got to be."
I close my eyes and sally screams.

I feel pain and sorrow.
Everything is black, everything is quiet.
I hear hollering and begging.
I ignore it all.
Why be in a world where humans hunt one another?
