as we lay sleeping
your eyes close
and you fall away from me
so suddenly

behind your eyelids
waves crash against the shore rhythmically
you hide your inner self
in a world (made of sand)

on the shore
I lay hoping for some revelation
but you drift to the sea
lulled away
until only your fragments are left - floating

blood pulses beside the tides
sweeping us away
we are drowning
sinking beneath the surface

meanwhile, I stared at the ceiling
hoping for some constellation
to soothe me to sleep
but instead there is only this moment

when I am awake - living
but you are sleeping
I ask if you too are alive
and you do not reply.
