Revolution

It is time to get up;
I hear the pounding on the door.
He yells-
because it is what I deserve

I hear the pounding on the door.
I dread what is to come
because it is what I deserve
for the way my skin is colored.

I dread what is to come:
the punishment I will receive,
for the way my skin is colored,
will leave scars deeper than my flesh.

The punishment I will receive
for loving my God, Yahweh,
will leave scars deeper than my flesh-
if I even make it out alive.

For loving my God, Yahweh,
I do not see it as a crime.
If I even make it out alive,
I hope I’ll change their minds.

I do not see it as a crime,
to love without conditions.
I hope I’ll change their minds,
so it won’t be looked down upon with disgust

to love without conditions.
I think the world will evolve,
so it won’t be looked down upon with disgust
to be more than what we’re used to.

“I think the world will evolve!”
he yells.
To be more than what we’re used to,
it is time to get up.
