What do you see
He asks
I see smiles
with eyes that hold something deep inside
(why dress in scarlett, oh devestated one; why adorn yourself with jewels and makeup?)
what do you hear
I hear soft, soundless cries
masked by laughs
They smile, and joke
joke about the knife that pierces them in the back
in the side
in the heart
hiding the yearn for acceptance
saying
they will not understand
they will not comfort me
come to the river
where peace flows by green pastures
even through the valley of the shadow of death
see how I still stand
do not collapse
do not grow weary
follow me
He says
trials will always come
but I will not forsake you
you will not fade away
see the food and water I provide
in the desert, you will not be parched
even when I sink into the sands
his strong arm holds on
I'm not holding onto you
but you're holding onto me
you cover me from the dry winds
and say to me
be strong
so I will stay strong
and finish the race set out before me
and through me your love will shine
my battle cry
(And they flee)
is my praise to you
Oh God
my rock and my protector
