Silence

Bated Breath

Tiptoe carefully,

Do your job quietly,

Reveal nothing.

To shatter The Illusion would be

To ruin everything.

Don’t interrupt the story

don’t don’t don’t

won’t won’t won’t

You can’t expect to read a book

If the pages are glued together

And the cover is locked.

But you can Admire it.

Say,

“What a fine book this is!”

“What pretty colors!”

“How big and impressive!”

Will you buy the book

you cannot read?

why not it’s free

 

A blank page

Challenges a writer

Taunts them

Laughs as they struggle

To be creative

To be unique

To be engaging.

After all,

This is their job-

Figuring out

How To Present Themselves

in words.

Condensed and appealing

And, of course,

Acceptable.

What a foolish venture.

Anything less than the

Ugly

Mundane

Excruciating

Truth is a Lie.

So when that pretty little story is finally written down,

What is it really saying?

That is known only to the author

….except not always

 

Sometimes, an author doesn’t know

their Story.

They might have a vague idea

Inconstant

Wavering

Fearsomely Abstract

….useless

However,

They know how to make others interpret their story

A Certain Way

That’s so much

Easier and

Safer.

But,

Can an author tell a fake story

And retain the real one?

 

An actor

Wears many masks

Plays many roles

Adopts many personalities

They

Lose Themselves

in their work and are applauded for it.

Bravo, dearest Liar!

Queen of Deceit!

Master of Trickery!

Some play pretend for so long that they

 

Become

 

their characters.

 

So ask them what is

Behind The Curtain.

They do not know.

They have never seen

The Curtain.

Because they refuse to break

The Illusion.
