When I put on
Those worn lavender headphones and
Press play
I can't explain...

It's like simultaneously pressing pause
On the paper calendar days
And empty obligations ruling my life
Or waving burning sage
At the diagnoses
And generational curses ruling my future
Or building a stage
Underneath the steps I walk
And the air I breathe
Is a microphone I carry within my lungs
With which I sing,
"Listen to me!"

The lyrics jump into my mouth
And out again
And with my throat warmed with sweet, raw melody
I become something new entirely
A song
Imitates a skipped heartbeat, a primeval roar
A powerful gust from soaring wings

And when I put on
Those worn lavender headphones and
Press play
I can't explain...
But I know its is I who rules me
