Power Struggle

Location

Sheila was the biggest girl in fourth grade

With skyscrapers as legs and eagle wings as arms,

She looked down at the rest of us, and liked it that way too.

No one ever told her what to do. Not even Ms. Johnson.

She was in charge of our whole class and no one tried to change that.

Her big shoulders and strong build is what made her this way.

She was Big Sheila and she couldn't do anything about it.

If we wanted to play basketball at recess, we had to ask her first.

She kept all the toys and balls to herself.

When she walked, we could all feel the floors shake a little.

And when she spoke, the first grade class could hear her from down the hall.

If she ever got mad in class about something, so many hands would go up to be excused.

Almost a race to the bathroom and Ms. Johnson would send us all one at a time.

One day we got a new kid in class

He walked in and you could hear our necks crack as we all looked up

He stomped over to his seat right next to Four eyed- Florence.

Everyone in that row scooted over to make room for him,

Almost shoulder to shoulder to each other.

At recess, no one could find any of the toys. Not even Sheila.

Big Lou was the now in charge of our whole class

And no one tried to change that...
