Poetry to Me
Before 10th grade, poetry wasn’t my thing
I’ve convinced myself I couldn’t write poems
Except for roses are red, violets are blue
Studying creative writing showed me
It opened my mind to what I could write
Short stories
Poems
Scripts
My first poem bled emotion
To put everything I’d been feeling on paper
It brought on a rush of relief
The more poems I wrote
The more alive I felt
Then words just pouring out of me
Everyone has their own understanding of poetry
Their own reason for why people write poetry
But to me
Poetry is just a complicated story
Almost like a riddle
A riddle that expresses our complicated inner selves
Perhaps even a not-so-simple way to express our true feelings
My poetry story
Though seemingly vague
Who am I kidding?
Poems are vague
My poetry story is all too true
And it continues on
To this very moment
