Poem for New Kid

Behind those eyes dark and deep
I see a shadow there that sleeps,
and through it all I’d hear you call
your voice’d be there
as if you care!
Bah, to think you feel anything…
Still, it stings my heart to know
that your status sits so low
and you refuse to rise
above you lies
and seek a happier fate.
It makes my efforts feel negate
as if I could change you
no, merely take a few
of those qualities that are buried deep
among those shadows that you keep.
I try because I think of all the times
that you’ve been there for me.
