A Poem for Lovers of the Past

you are the reason the ancients worshiped the sky.
someone so beautiful could not have come from the dirt of the Earth,
you were born in the aftermath of a supernova.
you have galaxies blooming inside of you
you exhale them with your cigarette smoke
as i try desperately to get some second hand.

they name hurricanes after people like you.
your eyes are gray like storm clouds rolling in
and your voice howls like the wind
you ripped apart my coastline,
flooded my shores
left me drowning.
left me to cleanup and rebuild alone.

you blew in silently like a blizzard.
you left me cold and buried
i fell on the ice you left behind
it ended just as quickly as it started.

we were the ocean.
you rocked me
and i rolled over you,
we broke as we hit the shore
knocking down big dreams and sandcastles,
and washing up our dead.

you are the reason i killed the flowers in my lungs.
turning them black with smoke made me feel closer to you,
but you flicked me away with the ashes
and camoflauged yourself into the seats of your car.

you were my fairytale.
dreams really did come true when we were together
and for just a moment we were invincible
and immortal,
but i guess she was too.

i'm learning to live alone
and i often wonder if butterflies think they’re dying in their cocoons.
if they’re thankful for their second chances when they emerge,
if they know how beautiful they’ve become,
or if they will always see themselves as worms.
