Poem on Conformity

Location

Dancing in the moon beams and glowing of the stars
Arms outstretched and welcoming

Then the sun comes out and I shrink away
I hide in the shadows and I cry out
"Don't see me. Don't see me."

I use closed doors as my shield
Books as my sword
I defend myself against the monsters of the world

Waiting
I wait for the darkness of the night to shroud me
To be my armor

I say "Don't come any closer."
To the world cloaked in blinding light

But they come

They wield their beliefs like terrible spiked maces
And beat down anyone in their path

They come for me

I can see their faces
Family, Friends, Strangers
Weapons raised

Everyone is wounded, bleeding fat tears
Everyone is beaten

I hold up my sword, hold on to my shield
And plead
"Please, don't! Don't do this to me."

They don't listen...

The night soothes me with quiet coolness
It demands nothing from me

I soak in the possibilities of the universe
Bathe in the flowing dreams of my youth

It's the night that loves me without prejudice
It's the day that judges all it touches

I am a woman in the night
This poem is about:
Me
My family
My community
My country
