Planes (Free Verse)

I scooch back
pressing my body
into the hard
leather seat
that’s just barely too
upright to be
comfortable.

I lean my head
against the wall but
it smacks just a
little too hard, sending
a pulse through my
already throbbing
brain.

I stare out the
tiny window
at the patchworks
of fields below us, trying
in vain
to find peace in their
lush
rolling
waves
hoping for sleep to consume
my body.

The harsh flourescent
lights seep through my
eyes, bleaching
my skull, and my pale
skin looks
sickly and
translucent

I take a shot of
Ginger Ale
because that’s all that fits
in these
tiny
goddamn
cups.

The glowing skeleton
of an unnamed
city below reminds me
that I hate
planes.
