Perfection Was Never the Goal

My feet are always dirty

they somewhat match my thoughts.

I could brush my hair ten times a day

and still find it tied in knots.

Scars fall up and down my legs

with a few scattered on my wrist.

They remind me of the leaps I’ve made

and the edges that I’ve missed.

I’ve been an actress for so many years

playing the role they wanted to see.

But when the curtain falls

along with the sun

I’m not who I want to be.

So I take away my filter,

and I do it with such pride.

For I am strong

you could be, too,

if we take it all in stride.

You’ve heard it before

I’ll say it again

be true to who you are.

Don’t mask your beauty

don’t dull your shine

don’t let a stranger set the bar.

You have the power

resting in your heart

I know it to be true.

Remove your filter,

and watch the world

open up for you.
