Perfection: one word death sentence

“Who are you?” ask my parents.

I am safe mom don’t worry. I am doing well in school dad don’t worry. I will be perfect.

“Who are you?” demand my teachers.

I am the student who will work till they can’t think anymore to get an A don’t worry. I will be perfect.

“Who are you?” shout my friends.

I am the one you turn to when you need a shoulder to cry on. I am the funny one you come to when you need to laugh. I am the one you come to when you need advice. I am the one who you can trust. I am the best friend you could ask for don’t worry. I will be perfect.

“Who are you?” screams the reflection in the mirror.

I am beautiful. I am smiling, can’t you see? I am the perfect girl I wanted to be when I was younger right? Right? I am everything I’ve ever wanted, hair done, perfect makeup, wearing an outfit that turns heads, and everything is perfect. I will be perfect.

Perfect.

The word that destroyed me.

The only word I will never be.

I am everything, but perfect.

Yet, I am happy.

I am free.

I am finally me.
