Paper Doll (28 May 2013)

i have the
prettiest paper doll.

found it on the street
on the way to school
one day

just a little bit dirty
used once and thrown away
by someone who wasn't very
nice to her toys

why would she do that?
i promised the doll
i never would

one day a boy at school
laughed at me
and took my doll and tore it apart

and mommy said,
it's just a stupid doll
we'll get another

mommy, i don't want another one

so
I stayed up one night to fix it
with bits of tape and lots of love
now i like to trace the tears
that nobody but i can see

i spoke to it when i was sad
the only friend i ever had
because the doll never minded
if I ever wanted to hold its hand

twenty years later
it's still my paper doll
still nobody sees the tears i fixed
but i like it that way
perfect flaws are there to stay

the colours fade
the paper increasingly fragile

but
still
i place my heart on its sleeve
as one who hears, but not to judge
one who loves
and never leaves

i have the
prettiest paper doll.
