paint it red

alice was the daughter of a senator and a socialite.

campaign trails were her cradle,

media scandals her bottle.

the perfect family,

blonde-haired, blue-eyed,

suffocating themselves with the gold around their necks.

the attack ads thought they could destroy her,

the sons of politicians thought they owned her.

her white rabbit came in the form of a girl with a buzzcut;

she held out her denim clad arm and said

“this is not the life you need to live.”

they dove headfirst into wonderland,

(a punk garage concert in kent, ohio),

and kissed under the red strobe lights.

alice realized then,

clutching the hand of her savior,

that it was those outside her wonderland who were truly mad.
