Opinions of the Medical Mind

Location

Your presence
is not the effect of
a lovers’ private quarrel,
though medical professionals
will tell you so.
With their shiny tools
and golden,
framed certificates
they wave clipboards around
telling you, “Shhh!”
Don’t argue, son,
you came from between
your mother’s thighs
and that’s that.
You came from
a conveyor belt
your father carries inside
him, and that’s a fact.
Now, don’t argue otherwise!
Don’t you know that—
I am a doctor
with a capital D?
That people pay their souls
to hear my expert
medical opinion
on what’s growing
between their toes?
I think I know
where potential comes
and life grows.
Medical professionals
will tell you so.
But I’ve seen the sky
late at night
through a telescope
that was not mine
And I think I know
enough of space
and time
to suggest that
you are not
in fact
the effect of
a lovers’
private quarrel.
No, not at all
but you are
the swirls
of stardust
that make up
the universe.
You’re the
balloon the child
watches as it ascends
into the heavens
where you are
every guardian
angel in existence
of every good
and every
greater child
whose parent looks
upon them
with such pure
love and protective
instinct.
Yes, you are
the best of times
and never
the worst of
times.
You are
the inspiration
and the poetry
rhymes that
exist only
to be said
with a romantic
tongue—
like Latin
or French.
You are
whatever makes
panties drop
and ovaries
explode.
Whatever makes
that overworked,
pencil pushing
office employee
stick around.
Yes, you are
the sneak preview
of an upcoming
Hollywood something
and the wild heartbeat
of a concert fan.
You are
so many
things
that I suppose
you could be
the effect of
a lovers’
private quarrel.
Medical professionals
will tell you so.
But I think
something exists
within
and without time
greater than the
expert opinion of
a glorified germaphobe
and greater than
what their
medical friends
would say in their
expert defense.
In fact,
I think I know
enough of space and time
to suggest that you
are something
more than
what can be contained
within this rhyme.
