An Open Sonnet to My Ex Best Friend

Dear Ex Best Friend,

I stand upon the shore of roaring sea

Attempting to see all that I have lost.

I dream what might have been and still might be.

Just like the waves around, I’m crashed and tossed.

The clouds roll in, as dark as blackest night

The stars provide no light by which to view;

The way you acted always seemed to fight

Against the things I am, and say, and do.

Then out of black abyss I see your glow,

The likes of which I’ve often seen before.

While drawing near to it, I nothing know

But that, once reached, I will need nothing more.

Yet there it stays, just barely out of reach;

I stand, alone, upon that forlorn beach.

Always with love,

Hannah Cook
