One Last Flight

There once was a heroine

With a long red cape

She saved kittens from trees

And innocents from fate

She flew all over

Far and wide

Over deep oceans

And continents alike

In the dark of night

She’d sneak from her sleep

And become the hero

Of her dreams

Then the sun would peak

Bringing death to the night

Beginning again

The horrors of real life

She’d stow away her cape

And don mundane clothes

She’d transform

Into what she loathed

An ordinary being

All alone in the world

With no one to care

With no hand to hold

Minutes and hours

Tick by as she waits

For a chance

To make a change

To save the world

One soul at a time

But only one

Was changed that night

Another soul lost

To the horrors of adolescence

And no one cared

About one last breath

Taken at the top

Of her apartment building

Before the girl in the long red cape

Soared once more into the night

One last fall

One last flight
