Ode to Teacup

Location

A teacher once offered me a proverb:

The purpose of a teacup lies in the empty space.

I think that gives too little credit to my teacup.

Even when holding nothing,

the curve of its handle looks at me cheerfully,

       a porcelain smile,

catching the morning sun on the windowsill.

Is beauty not purpose enough?
