Ode to Nihilism

maybe God just made his peace with death, and left the rest of us to stress,
over contemplations in our head, oblivious, ambivalent
or maybe God is living at the bottom of Loch Ness
and has a Scottish brogue and wears a kilt and munches on haggis

truth be told, the lies we’re fed are ancient, old, and outdated
divine depictions do deceive us, make us feel so mischievous
please believe us, we’re the reason all the trees are bare and leaveless
sparse and seedless, needles prick our skin and keep us docile beings

lethargic demographic targets, asses lard, barbecue sauces
ranch dressing has God’s blessing, don’t argue with the market
just park it on the sofa, move your face a little closer
to the screen and count your green, scheming on a bigger bonus

that’s the onus of America, your money will disparage ya
it’s funny how your carelessness embarrasses your marriages
the wear and tear your soul’s endured is very scary, so impure
your mockery democracy is toppling, just wait and see

but nihilists, we got it right, we never fuss or fight
we recognize that life is empty, isn’t nihilism tempting?
so kids give up your dreams now you know that life is worthless
don’t go searching for a purpose just sit back and watch the circus

convinced ourselves we know the truth and that we’re happier than you
we laugh at God and industry and cry ourselves to sleep
at night, we haven’t got a plan, we’re just sitting on our hands
calling everything a scam, isn’t nihilism grand?
