An Ode to My Composition Book
Coffee-stained
And littered with ear-dogged pages,
Oh, composition book;
You were always my favorite.
I must say,
You're not the prettiest book I've met
And I've seen you turn heads (away from you),
But your insides are so beautiful.
Did you know you were meant to be a field guide?
For a 12-year-old girl who just wanted a place
To depict the world like she saw it with her own eyes?
I guess you still are a field guide (in a way),
But you catalog a different type of nature.
The type of nature that this 17-year-old girl swears she understands;
The type of nature she writes down through the use of a pen and a few words that rhyme.
