At the Nurse's Office

Location

I lay upon a rubbery bed,

My mind fuzzy with lethargy,

And ponder what was in my head,

When I had decided not to sleep,

And that's when they dragged her in,

A girl not even thirteen,

The adolscent stranger with tears staining her cheeks,

How pitiful was she!

With hair of wooded brown, with a mingle of chestnut in between.

I hardly saw her face, but how young she seemed to be

A rounded, ruddy cheek, flustered freckles upon her nose

I hardly saw her face, but how young she seemed to be

And how her screams resounded to heaven on high and hell below

Her hysterical screams could tear a heart in two

I hardly saw her face, but how young she seemed to be

The hysterical girl with chestnut hair, her cheek was pink, her skin was fair

Her blouse was a lavender sort of hue, she was a youth

She wept on and on, she rattled the earth

Perhaps I cried, perhaps I did not,

I don't know, all I saw and heard was she

I hardly saw her face, but how young she seemed to be

Her name was Anne, she was twelve years young

She donned red ribbons upon her wrists, gifts from American education.

I watched her, simply watched her

What else could I have done?

She screamed and kicked and cried

Tell me what could have I done?

I could have held her and hushed her, told her she'd be just fine

How unfortunately young she was

She has so much time

I could have told her stories

I was like her once

But I sat and watched the poor wretch scream

Useful as a dunce

They took her away, I don't know where

I don't think I ever will

Her name was Anne, she was twelve years old

Another one of society's kills
