My Power

Location

In the classroom,

I sat in the back.

The teacher spoke of history,

I lower my head into my book for just a moment to write something quick.

The teacher notices and takes my book away.

She begins to read aloud my thoughts,

my words.

The class looks on with awe and shock

I sink into my chair

Embarrassed.

She reads aloud my words.

They begin to stare.

She finishes my page

with a look to the class

I expected laughter

but instead silence

A boy began to clap

and then a girl

and then another.

I looked around in shock.

The class claps

and the teachers gives me a respectful nod.

The teacher goes on with her lesson.

I look into my book.

Maybe my thoughts can help.

Maybe they can make people happy.

Maybe they can make me smile

Maybe I can help a friend.

I have the power to affect a class.

Why not others?

Maybe my words, my thoughts,

are my true powers.
