My Own Hero

Astronaut, cowboy, or fireman.

That’s what I used to say when I was a kid.

Over the years the answer changed,

but the enthusiasm stayed the same.

The excitement of life tomorrow

propels me despite the obstacles of life today.

Sometimes I think it’s impossible

and that I’m not cut out for the life I want.

When the world has me in doubt,

I ask myself,

“What can I do?”

As the chilling vortex of uncertainty almost sucks me whole,

I remember,

I can do anything.

No matter what’s thrown at me,

I can always throw it back.

Everyday I dream about the sweet fruit of my future,

so everyday I make sure to nurture the tree of my present.

Because I am my own hero.

I know that I can achieve infinity through my own vigor,

and that even in the worst of storms,

I can swim to the shores of prosperity.

Because I am my own hero,

I ignore my fear of the dark

because I know if I look hard enough,

I will find light.

Because I am my own hero

I write the story,

I choose who I will become.

Astronaut, cowboy, or fireman.
