my love for you

I have so much love for you

It's filled up all the boxes in my closet

It's piled up in stacks on my desk

It's strewn about my floor and hung up on my walls with thumbtacks

I have so much love for you i don't know what to do with it

My heart is certainly too small to hold all of it

And my hands are always full of other things

Love has always been pushed to the side

But my parents tell me to clean my room

And i don't have a place to put my love for you

So im sewing it into my clothing and wearing it to school

Im writing it in the margins of my homework papers

Im tying it as my shoelaces and buttoning it as my coat

I have so much love for you

Its music is louder and more beautiful than a thousand concert halls

Its voice sings instead of talking, its feet dance instead of walking

Its house is a fort made of blankets and pillows

Its hands are our hands but without the calluses

Its face is our faces without the frown lines

It's made of poetry and Christmas and potato soup and the brightest colors in the paint aisle

I have so much love for you

If your hands are empty

I'd love for you to hold it

You might know what to do with it better than me
