My Family, My Captains

 

There are many aspects that have shaped me into the person that I am today. Whether it be a concept, an individual, a group of people, or a personal experience, there are many parts of my life that have contributed to who I am and why. Of everything that has aided me in becoming who I am, I feel that the concept of family has been the most influential. I love them more than anything, I wouldn’t be who I am without them today, and I can’t wait to hopefully be able to repay them all someday for everything they have done for me.

 

From my mother that I adore

To my identical twin brother whom I would do anything for,

I cannot express how grateful I am

To have the most wonderful people in my family.

 

Considering you don't get to choose your family,

I am beyond lucky to have the one that I do.

Countless memories and lessons throughout my life,

Now I eagerly await the future and everything new.

 

A support system for anything life may throw at me,

They help me be the man I want to be.

They help me open doors, get my feet off the floor,

Define new ceilings, and give me surreal feelings.

 

A father that has taught me what a dad should be,

I only hope to have qualities of my parents in me.

Whether it’s what to do, or what not to do,

They have given me countless tools of value.

 

The reason that I want to be successful in life,

Other than being able to provide for my wife.

I want to be able to give my family everything,

Because without them, I could very well be nothing.

 

Words cannot even begin to describe what my family means to me,

They will always be the most important thing, I hope it’s clear to see.

 

 

My family and I use the words “I love you” with each other almost as often as we breath air. But I mean it more and more every time I say it and I hope that they know this. Thank you for your consideration of me for this scholarship, and I hope this poem does the best job possible to convey what my family means to me and the immense amount that they have influenced my life.
