My Dog's Dog Days

I cannot tell

If my dog likes it here.

Yes, when the door opens,

he perks up his ear.

And whenever we pet him

his tail wags. All year.

He seems glad when he’s fed

But is that really all?

Does he not care if he

retrieves the thrown tennis ball?

He travels nowhere.

‘cept the vet and the groomer.

And each day his face

Seems to get blue and bluer.

He ran away once.

Then he ran away twice.

But still, it just didn’t seem to suffice.

For I am not certain my pup is content.

Since the fields of this farm are his farthest extent.
