To My Dearest Future

Dear Future,

I hope you know, I think of you every day.

For every decision I make,

I see you looking over my shoulder.

I see your disappointment when I do something dumb,

Your happiness when I do something better,

And your pride when I fix my mistakes.

I hope you know, sometimes, I want you to go away.

I want you to leave me alone because I get sick of you.

Sometimes, I get so mad because

It’s just not fair.

It’s not fair that I always have to look out for you.

Why do you have to be so dependent?

I hope you know, I don’t mean everything I say.

It’s true that I wish you were less dependent,

But it’s also true that you have made me better.

You make me want to try

Because I know it makes you proud.

I think it’s good that you make me work hard.

You should know, I’m sorry.

I know that when I mess up, it hurts you more.

I know that I can avoid my consequences,

But somehow,

They always catch up to you.

And for that, I sincerely apologize.

You should know, this isn’t as easy as it looks.

I’ve been living life for a while,

So I usually know what I’m doing,

But when you take the wheel,

You’ll have to adjust.

Just stick with it through the lows and the highs.

You should know, I believe in you.

I would’ve given up a long time ago if I didn’t.

I trust you to make things better,

To keep things the same,

To fix what is broken.

I believe that you will be wise.

Thank you, Future, for all you have done:

You have always encouraged me,

You have always made me try to be better,

You have always comforted me.

Sometimes you frighten me,

Sometimes you intimidate me,

Sometimes you petrify me.

But through my fear,

I know that soon,

You will be here.

Although I get anxious,

I trust in you fully

To do what has to be done.

With Love and Admiration,

Present
