Music

What is music?

From infancy to adulthood music has been a part of my life. But I could never really define what it was. Music. Even its name flows off the tongue in such a pleasant way. Music. Is it the filler of silence in our day? Music. What is it?

When I was a child I started to read.

But not from picture books, no, not me. Black and White. Notes, little dots on lines. Black and White. Little marks on a page that keeps time. Black and White. Every scratch of black made a different silent sound once etched on white pages. Black and White. Isn’t that life?

Symphony

When I was young I went to a symphony. I loved watching the trumpets, cellos, and flutes, that’s where I wanted to be. The conductor stood. Every instrument was at its ready, awaiting the next order. The conductor stood. All eyes were on the perfectly orchestrated group that was tuned in elegant harmony. The conductor stood. The captain at his ready, prepared to lead the group of mismatched metals and odd-looking pieces into battle. The conductor stood. He readied his soldiers and march them into battle. Much like another conductor. The conductor stood. An eternal instructor.

Music is what you make it.

Whether a blessing or a curse, Good or bad, Beautiful or threatening: music is moldable. Music shapes to its instructor, is lead by a conductor, and follows the black and white path that is laid before it. Music is a part of life. We are music. We are a blessing or a curse, good or bad, beautiful or threatening: we are moldable. We are shaped to those around us and we have laid our black and white map of how to be saved. We either, read the markings, following them, and allow a conductor named Jesus Christ to lead us in our Symphony of life, our orchestra of mismatched metals and odd-looking pieces and let Him turn us into something that sounds so sweet. Or, we don’t: then we remain silent.
