Missing Puzzle Piece

They say home is where the heart is

But how can you find home if you cannot find your heart?

I was so young and insecure

Fear and loneliness accompanied me from the start.

Mom kept the monsters away

And sister held me through the thundering storms until I could sleep

I did not know how they held up, how they were staying strong.

We all had our demons, buried way down deep.

I grew and matured beyond my years

I thought I could defeat the demons by simply ignoring their existence

I thought I could simply shut myself out from the world

But the demons overpowered me, and I was losing my self-sense.

What we needed was our missing puzzle piece,

The one that would fill the empty space in our hearts;

The one our hearts could call home.

You came into our lives ready for a new start

You fought away mom’s demons,

You chased away the raging storms with wondrous lullabies

Your strength lifted our empty hearts, our broken smiles.

You brought love and safety back to our lives

It was you all along

Our missing puzzle piece, no longer all alone

You fit into our lives perfectly, for your heart had found its home as well

And now four hearts have joined as one in a place they now call home.
