Missed Opportunities

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul,

Warm, inviting, gleaming with light,

But I have never looked into someone’s soul,

Nor have I looked at my own,

I am denying myself the sight.

I was born blind in my right eye,

Unable to see how the world goes by,

Vulnerable, scared, and Engulfed,

To the constant hateful remarks from passersbys

“What’s wrong with her eye!?” shouted many,

Those words ran one hall to the other,

“She has a lazy eye, you are so ugly!”  My was heart-

Pounding as I began to run.

I conceal for fear of unacceptance,

For fear of being ugly in such a beautiful world,

For the fear of someone looking-

Directly in my eyes and become hesitate to-

Use “I love you.”

Never have I ever looked into the eyes,

Of a someone and felt the warmth, inviting,

Glistening glow.

Because I cannot even look at myself,

In the eyes.

Behind my brown eyes are sadness, but

To world, I always wear a smile with confidence radiating-

However if my eye is ever exposed,

I wilt, like a flower who has been neglected

By her gardener.

I will never show it, because my,

Side swept bangs won’t allow it.
