The Minds

The minds of many assemble one

A mind that rivals those of many

From wires, tubes, transistors, and circuits

The first of many faux minds were born

The mind was bigger than all of us

Spanning across the largest rooms

So much power of course, could not be contained

In a space the size of our skulls

The possibilities were endless

We need more power

We need it smaller, less room

Tubes too big, too bulky

So they made tiny chips instead of towers

The power was condensed

Into smaller space

Several in a room, but of course

We could still not fit it inside our homes

The possibilities were endless

We could do better

Make it smaller

Sleeker, friendlier than before

Bring them home

Green screens, text, keyboards, cassettes

A PET for the entire family

The minds made numbers and business easy

And some could educate and entertain

The possibilities were endless

Colors, sprites, sound

A market booming!

Everyone had one, these wondrous minds

These minds to make your dreams come true!

Mom and dad could do the taxes and check their schedules

And little Timmy could play his games!

But so many different ones to choose

Which ones should you get?

The possibilities were endless

A humble machine

A business machine

The boring suit of the miniature minds

But it was a standard

Modular, compatible, easy, convenient

Floppies and standardization

It's name fit it's style: 5150

But they were everywhere

The possibilities were endless

Upgrades, advancements, efficiency

Mice, desktops, cheaper and cheaper

Clones upon clones, so easy to use

These minds were a staple of the day

Windows to a world of entertainment

Multimedia, music, videos

While still keeping close to their business-y roots

And business they could do better than ever

The possibilities were endless

Networking, connections

Now you can collaborate!

You could play games with friends across the street!

You could text your boss in a blink of an eye!

Lines and cords across the world!

Cultures connected to cultures.

From the US to Britain to Germany to Japan

Goodbye distance, hello world!

The possibilities were endless

3D acceleration, graphics

Realism and movement like we've never seen

Virtual worlds so alien, yet so real

Life inside a screen

Small discs to hold more

Than the first mind could hold

1000 fold!

How could we get better?

The possibilities were endless

Faster, stronger, bolder, flashier

The minds advanced

Doing more than we could ever dream

From the first massive machines

Networks grew fast

The walls of distance broken

At the click of a button

The knowledge of all can be seen

Streaming, gaming, rendering

16-bit, 32-bit, 64-bit

From the lowest word processors

To the ultimate in workhorses and entertainment

Touchscreens, tablets

Minds the size of your hand

That could do more than the first minds a million-fold

Even our phones are these minds

Gamers, geeks, artists, poets, musicians

People from all walks of life

Congregate using these minds

And form strong bonds that could have never be done before

So, what next?

Space? Data across the vastness of the universe?

Maybe minds that can take us to other worlds?

Minds that can cure disease faster than any scientist?

Who knows?

The possibilities are endless.
