To Me

To my dearest future self,

My dear friend, first believe that we are friends.

All our life we’ve gone back and forth in believing it, but know it’s true.

I know you just as well as you know me, because we are the same.

There are times when I imagine you being a stranger to me,

Someone who has grown and changed in ways I don’t yet know,

But then I realize that will never really be.

You see life is a cycle of patterns and that’s why you are me.

With all the ups and downs of life there will always be another up and another down.

So I know who you are and what you’ll be because you’re just another version of me.

I have already learned how to walk, talk and eat. So when you’ve learned to travel, communicate and cook it really isn’t so very different.

Every year I’ve gone to school and learned new things, but yet they’ve been the same things so I’m still me.

I know I’ll have some bumps in the road, the ones you’ve already covered, but in the end the way you’ve changed and learned is no different than how I’ve already recovered.

This is probably a bit annoying now, me telling you we’re still the same. But I do hope that you’ll learn from me at least one more thing.

You’re still as much of a child as I am and we both have more to do. But through the parallel cycles I hope that there are a few things new.

I want us to learn the same things differently. When I fall I’ll get back up just as you, but I hope we do it faster and with a little less hesitancy to go on.

And if we become more resilient then perhaps we’ve already won. I hope that we can push farther and make the patterns a little different.

So our future self will be a better version. Of you and me learning better and taking greater leaps of growth. I hope that we’re both agreeable to make the oath. The future is far away but not as far as we believe, because you and I are the same, becoming something greater and hopefully still a friend.

With greatest love from your past self and friend.
