Ma Mere

Location

dusk reigns now
your back turned
against the setting light
and the sun,
the exhausted sun
filters through every strand
of your fading hair

the light penetrates
soft irises
lined with reminders
of failing time
they are my eyes

for the first time in weeks
your hands gesture wildly
as you exaggerate again
another story for me
my chest expands

 I had missed you.

there is so much of you
hiding within me
and I'm proud
no matter what they say

There is only good in you
that got broken somewhere
along the way.

I love you more than you could ever know.

and when the light
from the last cigarette burns out
so, too, will my light.
