Looking at You and Me

When you look at me,

What do you see?

You see someone trying to fit in,

And you laugh.

Because you know you will never be my friend.

Because you think you know me.

Because you see right through me.

When you look at me,

What do you see?

You see a lonely girl,

And you point.

Because you think I look funny.

Because you hope I will start to cry.

Because you want me to feel excluded.

When you look at me,

What do you see?

You see how others look at you,

And your smile falters.

Because the strange girl is staring at you.

Because that girl doesn’t really see you.

Because maybe not everyone likes you.

When I look at you,

What do I see?

I see someone who doesn’t have real friends,

And I feel sorry for you.

Because you are too oblivious to realize.

Because you can’t blend in.

Because you aren’t going to be anybody.

When I look at you,

What do I see?

I see a mask,

And I understand you a little more.

Because in a way, you’re just like me.

Because we wear a mask.

Because you are just as well liked as I am.

When I look at me,

What do I see?

I see a shadow of who I am,

And I am ashamed.

Because I was criticizing you when I should have been scrutinizing myself.

Because we wear the same mask.

Because we can’t let go of who we think we are.
