The Long and Broken Ballad of Ophelia

Why do you push me away

When all I want to do is help?

Please let me help take care of you,

Since you cannot yourself.

You used to be so kind to me,

Now you won't let me in.

I can't win.

You can't win.

We can't win.

I must return your letters,

Favors,

Tokens treasured,

Trinkets dear.

I cannot take

Nor keep them here.

I do apologize, my dear.

I can't say more for they may hear,

Nor can I come and hold you near.

How did these sorrows of ours begin?

I can't win.

You can't win.

We can't win.

I swear to you I'm on your side,

If only surreptitiously.

But can't you see?

They're watching me.

Is that why all your love for me

Has seemed to vanish almost overnight?

Do you see that slivered light?

You might.

And cornered dogs do tend to bite.

But I thought you of gentler disposition.

I can't win.

You can't win.

We can't win.

Be'ng tossed back and forth,

O're and under,

Tears my desperate heart asunder,

As my deepest fears you plunder,

To my horror and my wonder,

Tossing them back in my face,

As in front of me you pace,

Can you hear as my heart race-

-es deep inside my aching chest?

I only wanted what was best

For you.

You must believe that that is true.

I hope someday you will believe again.

I can't win.

You can't win.

We can't win.

My ears, my eyes,

I do not dare believe.

I fear they may,

They must decieve.

For if it's truth it is catastrophe.

What have you done to me?

Oh why these trials?

Oh why this test?

I only wanted what was best.

But now you've done what can't be fixed.

What horror, what a hell is this!

I don't believe I'll ever love,

Nor trust,

Nor look upon the world

In the same golden light again.

I can't win.

You can't win.

We can't win.

Now here I sit at riverside,

Shattered heart and battered mind.

Your betrayal is much to dear

For me to remain with you here.

But lo,

I have nowhere to go,

Nowhere to go,

But down,

Far down,

For I could go down, I suppose.

I could go down I suppose.

Some water for this withered rose.

Yes I could go down I suppose.

Some water for this withered rose.
