Loneliness

Location

Loneliness is said to be most familiar in the night,

When one lies in his bed in solitude.

That is not true.

For Loneliness finds its niche elsewhere.

Loneliness does not lie solely in the dreary night

Nor does it make its home in brightday.

Loneliness lives in a setting much more domestic:

Loneliness dwells in the hearts of men,

In the very soul of your being.

That is why it is of no importance where you are,

When Loneliness comes, it comes from within.

Just as likely as Loneliness is to sink in when one is physically alone at night,

It can hit just as hard when one is within a crowd of people during day.

Of no matter are the circumstances of which it arrives,

The spirit-shattering hopelessness will still eat away at your thoughts.

And the worst is that true Loneliness is inconsolable.

Both the celebrity with a large entourage

And the outcast with only his thoughts

Are all just within Lonesome’s chilling grasp.

One must not look at Loneliness as an evil entity,

A demon trying to drive one to insanity.

Loneliness is nothing more than a distant brother.

Though you may not appreciate his unwanted visit,

You must learn to accept him into your home and heart.

But as Joy’s twin is Sorrow,

Loneliness and Companionship come hand in hand.

One cannot feel true Companionship until he has been visited by Loneliness.

So relish when you’re in the hands of Company and Joy,

But never forget that Lonesome and Sorrow are trailing close behind.

And when you’re caught in their frigid clutches,

Remember better times are always within reach.
