Lights

When I was little

I used to be angry at the world

For letting the night sky

Grow dark.

I was angry at them

For taking away the stars

Before I had a chance to see them

Just because I was a dream away.

As I got older

I got angrier

With every photo of the Milky Way

And every little light blinking out.

But now that I’m oldest I realize

We did not get rid of the stars

But we did indeed take them.

We pulled them from the sky

And thrust them into the ground.

With every cityscape

And distant lights of towns unseen

The skyline of night shines brighter

Than all I could ever dream of.

So now that I’m oldest

I’ve learned to enjoy

The stars I have

For they are not in the sky

But on the ground

In distant lights.
