Life in Vertical

Life is vertical, not horizontal

Everyone spends their day looking around in front of them

Looking to the next thing, the next thing the next thing

They don’t make a moment to stop or a moment to sing

Some people spend too much time looking backwards

Rearview mirrors are meant for passing glances,

But they stay and stare to not take chances

Life is vertical, not horizontal

No one spends enough time looking down

Down at the feet that keep you grounded

At the floor upon which the first beats sounded

Too few folks spend their time looking up

No chins to the heavens, no mouths turned skyward

No lofty views for eyes turned wayward

Life is vertical

Follow your body from your toes to your hair

Look up to the clouds because someone is there

Raise your shouts to the sky, make a rabble defiant

Against those who would mock you, for on Our Lord you’re reliant

Our words reach upward, not all around

Mail travels through starways not by trucks on the ground

The galaxy’s bursting with deluges of sound

When tears cannot drown you, smiles abound

Let’s look at the Cross and abide by example,

It leaves no room for doubt, the evidence is ample

One branch points East-West, it is horizontal

But the largest points vertical, for those who feel trampled
