Letters on the Rock

Tue, 04/05/2016 - 09:27 -- G-Nor

On the Island deserted there are many rocks, I’m sure

But none of them is this one.

This one isn’t from the Island.

This one I already had.

Have you ever been to Canada and see what the mountains are made of?

It’s this old igneous rock. I’m sure you’d find it interesting

If that’s the kind of stuff you like

But that’s not the important part.

Did you know the colors we see are actually the absence of that color?

I know, it doesn’t make much sense, but I think I read that somewhere.

When you look at red, it’s actually green, and blue, and yellow, and everything else.

There’s some red paint on that rock, but now you know it’s not really red. It’s everything else.

This isn’t an artsy rock, though.

The paint isn’t a sun or something like that.

It’s a bunch of words that predate me.

It’s a little something from someone I should have know, but didn’t

To someone I did know, who isn’t.

“Je t’aime papa” is spray painted on this piece of shale.

I don’t really know if it’s shale; I just feel like it’s shale.

French is the most popular second language to learn, but that doesn’t mean you know French

So I’ll tell you what the rock says in plain English.

It says, “I love you dad”

I can’t help but wish I had known my uncle, but I do know him because he’s always there

He’s at the family gatherings even when he’s not.

He’s not alone, though; my grandfather decided to meet up with him this year.

Well, it’s not like he decided consciously; it’s more like his lungs decided, but you get it.

He doesn’t have to look at the message on the rock anymore, he can just hear it in person

“Je t’aime papa”

But that’s why there’s a Canadian rock on the Island there next to me.

I can get two men with one stone.

And in the end, when I’m on this island by myself, isn’t family still important?

This poem is about:
Me
My family
